About Cataract Surgery with Crystalens in Philadelphia
Dr. James S. Lewis is pleased to offer the Crystalens intraocular lens (IOL) to cataract patients at his cataract surgery offices. During cataract surgery, Dr. Lewis uses a process known as phacoemulsification to remove the eye’s cataract-damaged natural lens. Next, he replaces the natural lens with an artificial lens known as an intraocular lens. Crystalens is one of the latest and most popular IOLs on the market.
Crystalens is marketed by Bausch & Lomb and was first approved by the FDA in 2003. The latest version of Crystalens, Crystalens HD, was approved in 2008.
Unlike traditional, monofocal IOLs, premium IOLs are able to correct the patient’s vision at various distances, including the correction of presbyopia, the loss of reading vision that naturally occurs as a person ages. However, Crystalens stands apart from other premium IOLs due to its unique “accommodating” feature.
Other premium IOLs remain stationary in the eye and correct vision with the use of different zones on the lens. Because each lens contains zones that focus at various distances, these lenses are known as multifocal lenses. Crystalens, on the other hand, mimics the eye’s natural lens, flexing and moving in response to the eye’s muscles in order to focus at different distances. Crystalens is the only FDA-approved IOL with this accommodating function and the only IOL to use the eye’s natural focusing ability.
Following surgery, many Crystalens Philadelphia patients are able to perform all of their daily activities without glasses, including driving, reading the newspaper or working on a computer. In clinical trials, 88.4 percent of patients implanted with Crystalens had improved vision at all distances, compared to 35.9 percent of those implanted with a standard (monofocal) IOL. In addition, compared to patients implanted with other IOLs, patients with Crystalens have very few problems with halos, glare or difficult night vision.
Dr. Lewis is a highly skilled Philadelphia cataract surgeon who achieves impressive results for his cataract Philadelphia, Bucks County and Montgomery county patients. In addition to Crystalens, he offers other premium lens implants, including nanoFLEX, AcrySof Toric, ReSTOR and ReZoom, to restore the vision of his Philadelphia cataract patients.
